What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is a combination of the virtual reality and mixed reality worlds accessed through a browser or headset. This allows people to have real time interactions and experiences across distances. For example, you could visit a virtual world that looks and feels like a video game, but with other people who are also logged in from around the world. You could explore this world together, and even do things like play games or hold conversations. The possibilities are endless!

It’s important to know that there is no such thing as one "Metaverse". With so many different Metaverse platforms it’s uncertain who will set the real Metaverse standard.

In the Metaverse

One early popular example of a "metaverse" world is Second Life, which has been around since 2003. Second Life is a virtual world where users can create their own avatars, explore different environments, and interact with other users. There are also many user-created experiences available, ranging from fashion shows to concerts. Another popular metaverse platform is Roblox, which launched in 2006. Roblox is a user-generated gaming platform with millions of active monthly users. Users can create their own games or play ones created by others. There is also a virtual currency that can be used to purchase in-game items or upgrades.

In the Metaverse

Decentraland is a virtual reality platform powered by the Ethereum blockchain. Users can create, experience, and monetize content and applications.

Somnium Space is an open-source metaverse platform that officially launched in 2017 and became available to the wider public in 2018. This makes it among the earliest movers in the market along with industry pioneers such as Decentraland.

The Sandbox is a user-generated gaming platform that allows players to create, play, and monetize their own games.

Hyperverse is a virtual reality world that allows users to explore, interact, and create content. All of these platforms are examples of metaverse worlds that allow users to have immersive experiences with others from around the world.

Cryptovoxels is a world that exists on the computer. It’s made up of land, just like the real world, but people can own parcels of land in Cryptovoxels and build structures on top of it. Ethereum can be used to purchase land parcels. It is also compatible with popular VR headsets like HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, and Oculus Rift. Cryptovoxels is created by Nolan Consulting, an independent game developer based in Wellington, New Zealand.

How to get your company into the Metaverse?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as it depends on your company’s goals and objectives. If your company wants to have a presence in the metaverse, one option is to use existing platforms such as Decentraland or the Sandbox. This can be a good start if your company is looking to experiment with the metaverse or reach a new audience.

Pix can help you buy or rent land, build and deploy land, create 3D wearables and avatar animations.

If your company wants more control over its metaverse presence, you can create your own interactive shows in the metaverse. Pix specializes in exhibitions, game shows, live streaming and virtual concerts combined with user generated content. This option requires more resources, but it gives you the ability to tailor the experience to your brand and contribute to the Metaverse community which is often highly appreciated.

We also specialize in community building. E.g. Pix can help your brand with setting up digital AI avatars to deliver a more immersive and engaging experience. Digital AI avatars can provide onboarding to new users and can provide them guidance to progress in your digital world.

Keep in mind that the metaverse is still in its early stages of development. As such, it’s important to experiment and learn as you go. There is no one right way to do things, so don’t be afraid to try something new.
